The Madibaz fought back from an early deficit to record a second bonus-point victory and claim a vital bonus point in their 51-43 victory at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre on Monday.
UWC started very well and scored three quick goals before Madibaz could open their account. At 13-5 UWC called a power play but the Madibaz managed to slightly narrow the gap by scoring two goals in this time, compared to the single effort of the ladies of the Cape.
The first quarter ended 17-10 in favour of UWC but the Madibaz must have received some stern words from coach Lana Krige. The former Protea saw her charges quickly draw even and open up a sizeable lead, as they went from leading 22-19 to 25-20 to 33-20 in virtually the blink of an eye. The final power play was called but neither team could capitalise on the opportunity and the score was 33-23 at the break.
UWC, who some very vocal supporters in attendance, opened the scoring after the halftime break and continued to match the Madibaz goal for goal. They were unable to narrow the 10-point gap and the third quarter saw the Madibaz lead 41-31, looking to secure a full house of log-points from their trip to Stellenbosch by scoring fifty goals.
They managed to do just that, with the final score being 51-43. UWC battled willfully and were awarded with two individual awards, and coach Janine du Toit will know her team is getting closer and closer to a first victory of the season. The Madibaz next face Tuks in Port Elizabeth while UWC face Kovsies in Bloemfontein.
