UWC have been on a good run at home, they have played two games, against Wits and UFH, with both games they have come out victorious 6-0 and 4-0 respectively. The game against UFH could have been more if only they were clinical in front of goal.

Varsity Sports had the opportunity to chat to coach Salie Adams on the game against UFH and the next game, against old nemesis NWU.

“Another clean sheet at home which is good for us, but I wasn’t happy with the overall performance of the boys. But we welcome the three points.”

UWC went into the game against UFH missing their influential captain Thulani Mkosi who had academic commitments, and a few injuries to players such as Ayanda Nkunkwana and reserve goalkeeper Raoof Hendricks.

Coach Adams emphasised that, “When you play weaker teams you need to punish them but the boys lost focus.”

UWC’s next task is NWU and with a point separating the two teams, this promises to be a humdinger. This will be NWU’s first visit to Bellville.

“Playing a team of NWU’s caliber will be a good test for our boys. They are ready for battle and we are going for three points and nothing less on Thursday. I believe it’s their first time ever here at the Operation Room and hopefully the conditions will catch them out,” added Adams.

NWU come into the encounter boasting two wins and a draw in their first three matches. They pen their hopes on captain fantastic Sandile Mbatha, who has been on a good run this season.

UWC will miss their goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who is representing the country at the World Student Games in Taipei.

The match against NWU takes place in Bellville on Thursday the 17 of August at 18:30.
