The University of Witwatersrand, on Thursday evening, finally managed to get a full set of points in a Varsity Football match, after they managed to beat Central University of Technology 2-0.
After suffering two heavy defeats in the opening rounds of Varsity Football, Wits hosted CUT all the way from the Free State on a rather chilly Johannesburg evening at the Bidvest Wits Stadium.
The game got underway with the home side off to a dream start, when Wits defender Phuti Leboho managed to get his head on the end of cross, to nod in and give his side the lead inside two minutes of the game kicking off.
This goal seemed to encourage the Witsies even more, as they controlled the midfield battle and rallied forward for a second. The hosts came close to doubling their lead, when midfielder Mahle Mtabane almost caught CUT shot-stopper Ntasne Kabi off his line, but his effort went over the crossbar.
The visitors did have a few opportunities of their own, but it was the Witsies who got the next goal, when a Luke Pereira shot on the edge of the box caught a CUT hand, which meant a penalty for Wits. Pereira stepped up and made light work of the penalty, doubling his team’s lead. The last 10 minutes was a slow-paced affair, as Wits saw out the half, which meant the score remained at 2-0 to the hosts at the interval.
The second half saw an electric start from CUT, who looked threatening from kick-off, but didn’t manage to pull one back early on. The game then opened up a bit midway through the half, which saw Wits advance forward more often. The hosts, then suffered a setback, when midfielder Mahle Mtabane received a second yellow card after a reckless challenge, which saw him receive his marching orders from the referee.
Wits, with 10 men, sat back more often with CUT applying the pressure in search of a way back in the game. In the end the hosts held on, as they managed to get all three points and a first win of the tournament, with the full time whistle sounding with Wits winning 2-0.
