UWC lost 2-1 to CUT in the second game of the 2017 Varsity Football season, after a great first win at home. But that hasn’t changed their goal of reaching the semi-finals this season.
Varsity Sports caught up with Phiwokuhle Mpalala, one of this season’s top performers. “Shakes”, as he is known amongst his peers and teammates, is an integral part of coach Salie Adams’ attack this season. Having won the Varsity Football tournament in 2015 “Shakes” hopes to repeat that feat by winning the 2017 edition.
“The loss to CUT has not deterred our plan,” said Mpalala. “When the season started we had a target and that is to reach the semi-final; we just hit a bump at CUT but the plan is still on track.”
Phiwokuhle scored a brace in the opening game against Wits and also won the FNB Player of the Match award.
“The mood in the team has been high since the first game and the loss against CUT hasn’t done any damage to it. It’s part of the game. We took some positives from that game against CUT and we carry on,” added Mpalala.
UWC return to the Operation Room this Thursday, to take on UFH, who were hammered by TUT 7-0 in Alice last week.
“Now we turn our focus to the next game against UFH at home. We need to redeem ourselves and make our supporters happy. We are gunning for three points on Thursday so that we keep our target of reaching the semi-finals on track. UFH is not a weak team and we are not fooled by their recent results,” concluded Mpalala.
UWC host UFH at the UWC Stadium, in Bellville on Thursday 10 August 2017 at 16h00, live on SuperSport 4 and SuperSport Select.
