Hoping to go one better than their debut season, CUT will take on University of Johannesburg (UJ) in their opening match on Thursday.

After surprising football fans when they made it to the semi-finals of last season’s Varsity Football, CUT can no longer be counted among the underdogs. They have now proved their mettle and expectations have risen. Not much has changed since CUT’s dream run came to a halt after a penalty-shootout loss to Thursday’s opponents. The core of their team setup is still intact, even though they have lost a few players.

Captain Morena Lehloa declared that they have two short-term season goals. Firstly, they hope to repeat last season’s success and reach the semi-finals. Should they achieve that, Lehloa believes that they can clinch the title, which would fulfil their second goal.

“Anything can happen in the semi; nothing is guaranteed,” Lehloa said. He went on to declare that his team will take each game as it comes. “If we stick to our strengths, we can go all the way.”

Among these strengths, Lehloa mentioned that all his team needs to do is enjoy their football. “When you’re enjoying your football, winning is a given.”

Whether CUT have their eye on revenge or not, they will be aware that UJ presents a stern test. Kick-off is at 16:30 at the CUT Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Here’s what happened last time they met:
