Next week Thursday, 27 July 2017, will see the commencement of one of the most anticipated football tournaments in the country, the 2017 Varsity Football season, proudly brought to you by FNB, Samsung and Debonairs Pizza. The first round is set to kick off with the North-West University taking on University of Fort Hare in a match hosted at Fort Hare’s Davidson Stadium in Alice, Eastern Cape.
Having qualified for this year’s Varsity Football tournament, and recently walking away with the accolade for Team of the Tournament at the 2017 University Sports South Africa (USSA) championships, for their professionalism and discipline, NWU are firing on all cylinders heading into the tournament.
Ahead of the team’s first match on the 27th, NWU will host a campaign on 24 July 2017 at its campus in Mahikeng, to drum up support for the NWU football team as part of their send-off to face University of Fort Hare.
Having made it to the 2016 Varsity Football semi-finals, only to concede defeat to the reigning tournament champions, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the NWU team is set to deliver a spectacular performance in this year’s tournament as they seek to redeem their glory and aim to once again be at the top of the league.

“We are playing very good football at the moment,” said NWU team manager, Vuyolwethu Sambo. “The players are motivated and hungry for the opportunity to redeem their glory and take the number one spot. Even more so after walking away with the Team of the Tournament accolade at the recent 2017 USSAs.
“Remember, this is the team that has seen the likes of Thabo Mnyamane and many like him hone their football skills and now they are excelling on the national stage. We are ready.”
Kick off on 27 July at the Davidson Stadium is set for 18:30.
