University of Free State (Kovsies) annihilated the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), 21-0, in the second Varsity Hockey match in Potchefstroom on Friday evening.
This loss means that newcomers UKZN are still winless after five matches, conceding 63 goals while netting only eight. Six field goals from star striker Antonet Louw Mare saw the team from Free State humiliate UKZN to record the highest winning margin in Varsity Hockey history.
Antonet Mare Louw was well supported by fellow striker Nadia van Staden, who added one field goal and one short corner to her personal tally, as Kovsies were off to a flier.
But soon the umpires stopped play as a safety precaution due to intensifying lightning and thunderstorms. Kovsies were comfortably ahead on 7-0 when play was stopped.
Play resumed after a 50-minute delay. Kovsies wasted no time to extend their lead after the lengthy break. A blistering attempt off the stick of Nicole Kruger found the back of the net almost immediately after the restart. Kovsies exerting their dominance over the newbies and this was the beginning of the end for UKZN.
It was almost as if the break motivated Kovsies as a further 14 goals found the back of the net with Antonet Louw Mare completing her double hat-trick including goals from Van Staden (short corner, field goal), Nicole Kruger (field goal) and Lezanne Vermaak (two field goals).
The match ended 21-0 in favour of Kovsies. This is Kovsies’ second win following their victory over UJ, last week Sunday.
