Josh Silent has a knack of scoring important goals for the University of the Western Cape and on Monday the left-footed forwarded came off the bench to net a cracker when Udubs beat the University of Johannesburg 1-0 for their first win in Varsity Football this year. He also scored the winner when his side beat Tshwane University of Technology 2-1 in the final last year at the same venue.

Silent, the nephew of former Orlando Pirates forward Brendon Silent, has bagged three goals so for this season that have contributed to UWC’s seven points that have put them third on the log standings and in good stead to secure a semi-final spot. Silent hopes to continue scoring when his side travel to Mafikeng on Monday to take on North West University. “I haven’t scored in any of our away games this season yet, and that is still something I want to achieve.”

Although he scored the winner against UJ, Silent credited the victory to the entire team and singled out the defence. “Our defence was solid and I took the one chance that came my way and scored.”

Silent says the team is aware that defending the title will not only about the team but it’s for the UWC fans. “Last year the fans were the reason we won it – the energy, the singing and chanting motivates us,” says Silent. “We love our fans and there’s nothing we can do without them.”
