Dawood Christians from UWC took the lead in the bowling department to lead his team to a victory over Kovsies in this year’s Varsity Cricket tournament.
UWC won the toss and elected to field first as Christians took two quick wickets to put him on a hat-trick, but Kovsies survived on 2/2 runs at the end of the first over.
With the men from the University of the Free State on the back foot, it was Wihan Victor and Siphamandla Mavanda out in the middle to end, what can be described as an intense over, on 8/2 after three overs.
A steady partnership of 51 runs between Victor and Mavanda ensured that the scoreboard kept on ticking for 52/2 after 10.3 overs. Christians bagged his third Kovsies wicket thanks to some brilliant bowling and a catch to send Victor (28) back to the locker room with Kovsies on 6/3 after 11.3 overs.
Arno Bouwer (8) lost his wicket as he was caught by the safe hands of Mamhiyo to leave Kovsies on 80/4 after 14.3 overs. Kovsies ended off their batting innings as Mavanda (56*) got his 50 alongside Dilivio Ridgaard (23*) to end things for Kovsies on a score of 127/4 after 20 overs.
UWC needed to chase 128 runs to stay in the competition as Tayo Walbrugh and Adrian Du Toit stepped to the crease as they showed a solid start to put UWC 24/0 on the scoreboard after two overs.
Marno van Greuning with a superb catch in the outfield secured the first wicket of UWC’s Walbrugh (6) to send Kovsies into over three with a score of 24/1 after 2.4 overs.
As Du Toit (44) looked to approach his half century, wicketkeeper Dilivio Ridgaard and bowler Ruan Van Rensburg contributed to the second wicket of the match and left Kovsies on 57/2 after six overs.
The two new batsmen for UWC; Zubayr Hamza (38*) and Godwill Mamhiyo (15*), kept running between the wickets to put their side 78/2 after 10 overs.
After the strategy break, the UWC called for the Powerplay Plus over as the two batsmen at the crease lead them to victory over Kovsies.
UWC clinched the match by eight wickets. Their tournament unfortunately coming to an end, finishing fifth on the log, as Madibaz failed to defeat Tuks.
