UCT and UWC took to the field on Thursday morning with both sides desperate for a win, but UWC took the initiative with their spinners and opening batsman taking them to a clinical 10-wicket victory at the Puk Oval.
The stars for UWC were the spin trio of Emmanuel Sebareme (2/18), Zain Allie (1/24) and Luke Philander (3/14). In the batting department, openers Tayo Walbrugh 69 (51) and Adrian du Toit 38 (36) took their team home without losing a wicket.
It was a one-sided contest from the start as UWC struck with Thandani Majebe trapping Taariq Chiecktey in front for 7.
Jack Newby was the rock for UCT with a solid 36, but he was part of a three-wicket batting collapse as UWC went from 82/2 to 83/5 due to UWC’s spinners. Emmanuel Sebareme and Zain Allie bowled beautifully after the strategy break with guile and accuracy.
UWC’s Luke Philander also joined the party with a hat-trick in the penultimate over as he finished off UCT’s charge with 3/14 in his three overs.
UWC started their chase untroubled as Walbrugh and Adrian du Toit put on a 130-run unbeaten partnership in reply. Du Toit was especially good off his legs with one flick going for six.
Walbrugh also favoured the onside boundary with a number of exquisite pull shots, taking a liking to Josh Coetzee’s bowling.
It was plain sailing for UWC against their Cape neighbours for the majority of their innings as they reached the 10 over mark at 90/0.
The left-hand and right-hand combination and the use of the Powerplay Plus over worked in UWC’s favour as they strolled to a bonus point victory with 33 balls to spare.
