A good fielding and bowling performance saw the NWU-Pukke to victory at Senwes Park on Tuesday when they faced the NMMU Madibaz.

The Madibaz won the toss and elected to field. The visitors managed to put the NWU-Pukke on the back foot from the start when both J. Malan (1) and M.Ackerman (1) departed early in the match followed by S.Dadswell who went out for a duck.

When R. Haasbroek stepped up to the crease it was time for a crucial partnership for the NWU-Pukke. Both Lubbe and Haasbroek fought it out in the middle before the Madibaz struck with good bowling by Nqweni. Haasbroek departed for 16 runs after 16 balls.

Haasbroek was followed up by E.Lubbe (7), who continued to add to the scoreboard before he was run out after 10.3 overs.

It was the steady partnership between L. Senokwane, who scored the second highest knock in the NWU-Puk innings, and W.Lubbe, who continued to contribute at the other end.

It was a captain’s knock from W.Lubbe, departing with 86 runs off 53 balls, trapped LBW. Lubbe scored four sixes and eight fours in his innings.

L.Senokwane (34*) and J. Van Wyngaard (7*) took their side through to the very end add 19 extras to a final score of 171/6 after 20 overs.

After the break, Christensen and Hansel walked to the crease to face the opening bowler, Jovaun van Wyngaardt.

The NWU-Pukke showed their true colours by taking two quick wickets, M.Hansel (24) and M.Christensen (18) after a terrific delivery by W.Lubbe and a good catch by M.Ackerman. Matthews from the NWU-Pukke followed up by taking the wicket of L.Brown (4) as the NWU-Pukke’s bowling attack put them back into the game.

The youngster of the NWU-Pukke, B. Dandala, showed some superb bowling attack and bagged two consecutive wickets of A.Ferreira (6) and S.Nqweni (0) of the Madibaz.

D.Matthews joined the party and contributed to what seemed to be a wicket festival and claimed the wicket of Madibaz’s O.Nyaku (4), which put the visitors on 78/6 after 14 overs.

Madibaz needed 88 runs in six overs, but once again, B.Dandala broke the momentum for the Madibas by taking the wicket of Koekemoer (9). Davidson went out for a golden duck, which put the Madibaz at 84/8 after 15.3 overs.

The end of Maritz (43) was the last straw for the visitors as they needed 27 runs to win with only two overs remaining.

The NMMU-Madibaz fell short on 152/9 after 20 overs, as the NWU-Pukke earned their second victory of the day.
