NWU-Pukke got their Varsity Cricket off to a cracking start, beating UCT by 10 wickets on Tuesday morning in Potchefstroom.
The Potchefstroom outfit won the toss and elected to field first. This proved to be the right decision, when UCT were unable to score quick runs.
UCT lost the wickets of Jack Newby and Taaria Chiecktey with successive balls in the ninth over. They put on 55 runs for the first wicket and although it was a slow start, it seemed to give the Capetonians a solid base.
But the middle order was unable to build on the foundation laid by the two opening batsmen. Except for a little cameo innings by Riaz Sader who scored 16 runs of 7 balls, there wasn’t much to write home about.
UCT’s inability to build partnerships in the middle of the innings proved to be their downfall. But credit must also go to the boys from Potchefstroom, who restricted the visitors on most occasions to single runs with clinical fielding.
UCT scored 119/9 in their 20 overs and with a required rate of just 5.95 per over, this would never post a threat to the NWU-Pukke.
The NWU-Pukke were off to a good start, with Janneman Malan tearing the Capetonians’ bowling apart scoring 94 from just 42 balls. Wihan Lubbe, on the other side of the pitch was happy to play the anchor role.
NWU-Pukke reached the total in the tenth over, making their intensions clear for this week. Janneman Malan with an emphatic unbeaten 94 in 42 balls.
