The end of a Varsity Netball career can be emotional
It’s not often that you see a player getting emotional on national television. But in her post-match interview Juline Rossouw, captain of Maties, struggled to fight back the tears when she made mention that the loss against NWU-Pukke was her final game in the famous maroon vest. A teammate of hers in the national U21 team in 2013 and captain of the University of Johannesburg, Deancke Rohde, also played her final game for her university.
Varsity Netball officials are top quality
Al four referees that were in action in the two semi-finals, Elizna van den Berg, Janet Edeling, Marielouw van der Merwe and Anso Kemp are international umpires. Van den Berg, Edeling and Kemp received their international grading recently.
Strong Paarl flavour in semi-finals
In the starting line-ups in the semi-final between Maties and Pukke, four players attended high school in Paarl. They are Stephanie Brandt (Maties, Paarl Girls’ High), Juline Rossouw (Maties, Paarl Gymnasium), Mandy Hermanus and Sig Burger (both Pukke and La Rochelle Girls’ High).
Tuks are one match away from history
Will the pacesetters, Tuks, go all the way this time and become the first team to end the competition unbeaten? In 2013 Pukke and 2014 Tuks were undefeated until both lost in the final to Kovsies. Last year Kovsies went unbeaten throughout the pool stage before they stumbled in the semi-final against Pukke.
Current and former Proteas flavour in coaching staff
All four assistant coaches involved in the semi-finals are former and current Proteas. They are Elsjé Jordaan (Madibaz), Erin Burger (Tuks), Elize Kotzé (Maties) and Julene Meyer (Pukke).
