“It’s a honour couching her and I know for the players playing with her as well. Her passion and energy is contagious,” said Christine Behan, coach of Maties about Juline Rossouw, the university’s latest Protea.

Rossouw, or Jules as she is known by her teammates, has been included in the Proteas team for the Diamond Challenge taking place in Durban from Sunday 2 October until Wednesday 5 October. Apart from the Proteas, Uganda, Zimbabwe and a South African A team have been selected.

Rossouw (24), a former SA U21 and SA Fast5 player, is the first Maties player to be chosen for the senior national team since Claudia Booysen (formerly Basson) in 2007.

“Juline has shown that there is no replacement for hard work. She is rewarded for her high work right and commitment over the past five years. Nobody deserves this more, she is one of the most hardworking and disciplined players I have ever come across.

“I believe this is the beginning of a long career at national level for Juline,” said Behan, who is a former Proteas and Maties player herself.

Rossouw, captain of the Maties, has been one of the standout players in Varsity Netball 2016 and her inclusion is richly deserved. She has in particular been very good with interceptions.

She’ll be back for her university’s semi-final on 10 October.

Interesting facts:
Rossouw is the 20th Protea player to have played in the Varsity Netball Series.
She is the 11th player to become become a Protea after first playing Varsity Netball.
