Losing their first match of the season on Sunday to UP-Tuks doesn’t necessarily mean NWU-Pukke are no longer on course to retain their Varsity Netball title. Thrashing VUT on Monday has restored their confidence to go back to their best in the remaining rounds of matches and reaching the semi-final.
Goalkeeper and goal shooter, Kefiloe Tsotesti, still believes they are on the route to defend their title. However, she realises that they need to work hard in order to have a successful 2016 campaign.
“We didn’t play our game on Sunday and by the time we tried catching up, it was too late – that’s why we lost by four goals. But we were able to make a comeback against VUT and that brought back our confidence. We still have games to play and we have to win them all to make sure that we get to the final and defend our title,” she said.
Tsotetsi is completing her honours in BA Behavioural Science and she is hoping Pukke defend the title successfully to crown her varsity career in style.
“We are still in the run and I think as this is my last year, it would be great to walk away with the trophy. But we are not panicking, it was only one loss, there is still much to gain,” she added.
Pukke have a lot of experience on their side and they are likely to walk over UCT in their next match, but that can’t be said for their game against the improved Madibaz.
Tuks also need to work on proving themselves. They are among the best teams but still don’t have the trophy to show for it, with their rich squad. As they are cruising in the tournament, they need to beware of complacency, as that would cause them to lose focus and finish the competition with nothing to show, again.
