Varsity Women’s Football hosts, Pukke, lost 2-1 to UWC thanks to goals by Thalea Smidt and Amogelang Motau on Thursday night in Potchefstroom.
UWC scored in the opening minutes in emphatic style when Thalea Smidt scored as early as the second minute with an audacious lob over the Pukke keeper.
But it took Pukke just 14 minutes to find an equaliser when a fine through ball put Motshidisi Nyaka through on goal. She calmly slotted past the UWC goal keeper to make it 1-1.
The match was feisty from the get-go and both team physio were kept busy throughout the match. Just before the break UWC though they had the lead when Amogelang Motau crossed and Miche Oosthuizen’s header hit the crossbar and upright and it went out.
UWC continued to threaten Pukke’s defence and it was primarily Pukke’s goal keeper that kept them in the match. But right on stroke of half time UWC’s Amogelang Motau crossed into hands of Pukke’s keeper who fumbled and it went in. It was 2-1 to UWC at the break.
The second half was a cagey affair with UWC having the upper hand and continuing to test Pukke’s goal keeper, threatening their goal. Abongile Dlani had blistering pace and if it weren’t for a few perfectly timed tackles by Pukke’s defenders, UWC would have stretched their lead.
Drishana Pillay bossed the UWC defence, while their right flank kept Pukke on their toes. Puleng Moremi, Abongile Dlani and Nicole October combined superbly to work the ball into Pukke’s box.
In the end although the scorline was close, UWC won comfortably.
