The opening encounter of Pool B in this year’s Varsity Women’s Football tournament ended in a 2-1 win for The University of Cape Town in their match against The University of Free State. This close affair took place on Thursday, 15 September at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds in Potchefstroom.

Both sides were tentative in the opening few each minutes as they looked for an opening. Most of the play took place in the midfield as Conco Silindile of UFS and Nina Woerman of UCT were the shining lights in attack.

Chitanda Shalom and Robyn Ausmeier were also great on defence whenever UFS looked dangerous. UFS’s first real opening came from a corner that Lerato Moshoeshoe took advantage of to open the scoring with a thunderous header that gave goalkeeper Sibabalo Noludwe no chance.

That goal seemed to wake UCT up as they dominated the final 15 minutes of the first half. The women from the Cape were rewarded when Katherine Atkinson tapped home from close range after a goal mouth scramble.
The second half went much the same as the first half with both sides and their respective coaches urging their sides on with everything that they had.

UFS thought that they scored their second but it was not allowed as a UCT player had been fouled in the process. The physicality of the match also got more intense as the match wore on. Some ferocious tackling was dished out with players meeting the turf regularly.

UFS had a final chance with a free kick just outside the penalty box, but UCT’s defence stood firm.
UCT’s Esther Sampson scored the winner in dying minutes of the match to send her side into unbridled joy.
