UFS claimed bragging rights over CUT as they won this Varsity Women’s Football opener 2-0 in Potchefstroom.
The grass was cut and soccer boots got dirty as Bloemfontein’s finest went head to head in a nail-biting derby.
The first half was rather dominated by a sea of blue as CUT, dressed in red and white, was confronted by a goal-thirsty UFS outfit.
The CUT goalkeeper could barely relax as the fierce Kovsies consistently attempted to tear through her nets. At the end of a lengthy 35 minutes filled with intense pushing and pulling, both teams remained goalless.
Surprisingly, CUT pulled up their socks and tried to create an uncomfortable battle-ground for the blazing blue Kovsies team.
Sadly for them, a few minutes into the second half, UFS number 15, Thembisile Msimanga, released an unstoppable shot which placed her team in the driver seat – 1-0.
This did not stand in the way of the women in red and white as they commenced to apply an increasing amount of pressure on their opponents. The pressure was however watered down by Msimanga, as she fired another lightening bolt that marked the end of the match which UFS won 2-0 to secure bragging rights in Potchefstroom.
