UJ overcame an early fight by VUT to claim a victory in the final match of Monday’s Varsity Netball action and move up to fourth spot on the log, with a 61-39 victory.

VUT led in the first five minutes, but UJ pulled themselves back into the game. But VUT soon led again in a see-saw opening quarter. The first quarter ended 13-12 to UJ, pulling ahead just before the whistle.

The second half started well, and the contest remained even until the final seven minutes. VUT crumbled and kept losing possession, at one stage VUT conceding four points in succession without a reply of their own. Nhlamulo Mhlari of UJ said at the break that it had been a very physical first half.

Kim-Roche Holmes moved back to goal attack from centre, while Christelle Botha moved from goal attack back to centre. UJ coach, Leigh-Ann Small, made the change and the results were instant. UJ won the second quarter by 14 goas to 6. UJ making far more intercepts and turnovers.

The third quarter was dreadful for VUT, as it ended 44-25, VUT scoring just 7 to UJ’s 17. Sentle Ditedu made a big contribution for VUT and Nokwanda Khumalo was the brains of their operation, but it wasn’t enough to overthrow UJ.

Deancke Rhode and Holmes accumulated goals regularly for UJ. Their team ultimately made 30 more attempts than VUT. The match ended 61-39.

“We really needed this win,” said FNB Player of the Match Kim-Roche Holmes. “We needed to get back together as a team and I think this win will bring us together.”

“I think it’s a good win for the team,” added UJ captain Deancke Rhode. “But we need to go back to the drawing board. We need to improve on our consistency and keeping our centre passes.”
