In a clinical performance and one-sided affair, Kovsies took back their second place on the Varsity Netball log, with a ruthless 99-18 win over UWC at Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria.
Kovsies started their second game of the bumper weekend with a single change in the starting line up as Chanél Vrey replaced Jana Scholtz at goal defence due to Scholtz’s injury after her collision with Madibaz’s Hlumisa Sithonga on Sunday.
The Free State side again started their match with an early lead with the attack bringing the ball very cleanly to the shooters to convert. Unfortunately, on the UWC side, the shooters were not able to convert their opportunities to get points on the board, resulting in an early substitution as Aimee Cupido replaced Vendjihonga Katjaimo at goal-shooter. Cupido quickly put her side on the board, but this was followed by 13 consecutive goals by Kovsies.
With an 89% goal percentage, 3 interceptions, 15 turnovers and 8 rebounds in the quarter, Kovsies lead by 23 goals as the score stood at 25-2 after the first quarter.
Both sides opted to start the second quarter with no changes as UWC slowed the game with patient play. Unfortunately, the UWC defence seemed to struggle in keeping up with the quick attacking pace of the Kovsies side.
Just over five minutes into the quarter, Kovsies called for their powerplay that UWC were able to capitalize on, scoring two double pointers, taking their score to 7 goals while limiting the Kovsies side to only one double pointer.
The final seconds of the quarter saw UWC reaching the 10-goal mark in a much better spell of play taking the half-time score to 47-10.
Kovsies coach, Burta de Kock, started her team’s second half with fresh legs and some positional changes, as Khanyisa Chawane moved to centre with Oageng Khasake coming on at wing attack, Ancia Pienaar replacing Ané Retief at goalkeeper, and Rieze Straueli replacing Rolene Streutker at goal-shooter. Changes on the UWC side saw, amongst other, Katjaimo coming back on at goal-shooter.
Three minutes into the second half Kovsies reached the 50-goal mark as the new combination got into their rhythm. Chawane showed her Proteas experience with excellent timing, snaffling a handful of interceptions within minutes of each other.
UWC opted to make regular changes throughout the quarter in search of more efficient combinations. Although they had better spells of play, it wasn’t enough to stop the Kovsies side as they extended their lead to 55 goals as they ended the third quarter 70 goals to 15.
The final quarter saw more changes in the Kovsie camp as Meagan Roux came on to replace Lefébre Rademan at goal attack, Rolene Streutker came back on in the goal-shooter position, and Retief came back on at goalkeeper, as Mdletshe took over the wing defence position from Biance de Wee.
A wonderful effort by UWC goalkeeper, Wilmedine Boer, saw her reading a long pass and taking an impressive interception.
Five minutes into the final quarter, Kovsies record the highest score in the competition thus far with 79 goals, while UWC was yet to score in the quarter.
With six minutes left to play, UWC called for their Powerplay. However, it went rather differently to the first as they were unable to capitalise, while Kovsies scored four double-pointers thanks to hard defensive work from Retief and classy shooting from Roux, taking them closer to the century mark.
With two and a half minutes to play, Kovsies worked hard to reach the magical 100 goal mark but they ultimately missed it by a single goal as they ended the match with 99 goals to UWC’s 18.
