In what was a Cape Derby in Pretoria, Maties claimed a dominant 76-22 victory over UWC during Sunday’s action of the Varsity Netball bumper weekend.

Maties, on the back of Claudia Jarrard and Chrisley Marshall unerring shooting inside the ‘D’, built their score steadily from the first centre pass and never let go of the momentum.

After the first 15 minutes the score read 19-6, with Maties greater physicality, speed and precision proving difficult for UWC to handle – despite their best efforts.

That said, UWC did far better in the second quarter and frustrated Maties at times – Heidi Kuzatjike at wing defence in particular. Nonetheless the score was 33-10 at half-time and it was difficult to see what a positive outcome for UWC for be by the end.

Even more so when, in the first exchanges of the third quarter, UWC star player Amber Coraizin hobbled off with a right knee ailment. UWC seemed to be caught cold when Maties at the same time called their Powerplay and duly took the score from 33-10 to 43-12 during the two minutes.

Maties held the momentum even after the Powerplay, progressing the score to 49-13 when they stalled for almost two minutes just short of their bonus point. As it happened, they brought it up only for UWC to call their Powerplay – but they failed to benefit as Maties scored one double-pointer during the two minutes…

At the close of the third quarter, the score read 56-17 in the Maroon Machine’s favour with their bench have made good impact up and down the court.

That was again the case in the final quarter, as coach Zanele Mdodana tried different combinations and players in their less-favoured positions.

UWC meanwhile were struggling to get their hands on the ball while Sian Moore and Nicholé Taljaard dropped goal after goal at will.

By the time the final hooter went, with the score at 76-22, it was clear to see why one team is gunning for the title while the other is near the foot of the standings.
