Varsity Women’s Football fever hits Potch

The Varsity Women’s Football tournament kicks off in Potchefstroom at the Fanie du Toit Stadium on Thursday, 15 September 2016.

Football fans are in for a treat as eight universities compete for the Varsity Women’s Football title. Last year, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) walked away victorious, beating the University of the Western Cape (UWC) 2-1 in a nail-biting final at the UWC Sports Stadium. This year the team is determined to retain the title for the third year, according to their coach, Tebogo Mokai.

TUT will have the home advantage should they advance to the final, after the men’s team beat NWU-Mafikeng to secure a home final on 22 September 2016, meaning that the women’s final will take place at the same venue, before the men’s final.

The Women’s Football tournament is a different format than the men’s. The eight teams are divided into two pools, Group A and Group B. The two teams who finish in the top two of each of their groups will face off in the semi-finals. The winner of those two matches will meet in the final.

Hosts NWU-Potchefstroom will compete with UWC, University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Central University of Technology (CUT) in Group A while defending champions TUT are drawn alongside University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks), University of Free State (UFS-Kovsies) and University of Cape Town (UCT) in Group B.

“The competition has gained momentum since its inception in 2013 which has seen the number of teams grow from six to eight,” said Varsity Football Manager, Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi. “Not only has the popularity of the three-day tournament seen good growth, this year’s edition will have three matches being televised on SuperSport.”
